Open House on I-880 Southbound HOV Lane Construction

On January 16, 2013, Caltrans, Alameda CTC and the City of San Leandro held two informational open houses in San Leandro about the upcoming HOV lane construction.

cars on freeway The I-880 Southbound HOV Lane project, a partnership between the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), City of Oakland, City of San Leandro and Alameda CTC, will widen the southbound I-880 mainline from Hegenberger Road to Marina Boulevard for a high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane and will reconstruct the Davis Street and Marina Boulevard overcrossings to accommodate the HOV lane and provide standard vertical clearance over the freeway.

The project will extend the start of the southbound HOV lane to the north by approximately 3 miles; construction includes widening of the bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad and San Leandro Creek. Approximately 3,000 feet of soundwall will also be reconstructed. The project will be built under two separate construction contracts, both of which Caltrans will administer. The north segment of the project extends from Hegenberger Road to just north of Davis Street. The south segment extends from Davis Street to Marina Boulevard.

map of freeways in San LeandroProject benefits: This project will reduce recurrent southbound congestion and delay during peak periods by improving highway service to carpool and transit riders, decrease commute times for all riders, enhance safety, and encourage ridesharing and the use of transit. Reconstructing the Marina Blvd and Davis St Interchanges will improve vertical clearance on Interstate 880 and reduce the frequency of big rigs with high loads hitting the bridges.

Project schedule: Construction for the north segment from Hegenberger Road to just north of Davis Street will begin in late January 2013 and is expected to be complete by spring 2015. Construction for south segment from Davis Street to Marina Boulevard will begin in late January 2013 and is expected to be complete by spring 2016.

Construction cost: $83.4 million
Total Project cost: $102.6 million
