I-680 Sunol Express Lanes
Located along a 14-mile stretch of southbound I-680 from State Route 84 south of Pleasanton to State Route 237 in Milpitas, the I-680 Sunol Southbound Express Lane has been in operation since September 2010.
A northbound express lane along this same corridor begins construction in early 2018.
WHEN DOES IT OPERATE?
The I-680 Express Lane operates Monday - Friday 5 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Outside of these hours, the lane is open to all vehicles at no charge.
WHO CAN TRAVEL IN THE I-680 EXPRESS LANE?
- Solo Driver with a valid FasTrak account may pay a toll to travel
- May carry a FasTrak Flex toll tag set to 1, or
- May carry a standard FasTrak or bumper tag
- Carpools, Clean Air Vehicles with qualifying DMV sticker, Motorcycles, and Transit vehicles may travel toll free under the following conditions:
- No toll tag in the vehicle (none required)
- Standard FasTrak toll tag placed in mylar bag
- FasTrak Flex tag set to 2 or 3+. FasTrak Flex has a switch that allows drivers to designate whether they are driving solo, or are a carpool with 2 or 3+.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The express lane is always free for carpoolers. For solo drivers, the overhead sign states the toll amount to travel to next zone (top line) and the price to travel to the end of the express lane (bottom line). Toll prices can change every 15 minutes.
Customers are locked-in to a toll rate controlled by the overhead sign prior to location of entry. The locked-in rate does not change if the price goes up or down while the customer is still in the express lane.
SET IT BUT DON’T FORGET IT
If your flex tag is detected in different positions during your express lane trip, you will be charged based on the lowest occupancy that is detected.
For example, switching the Flex tag setting from 1 to 2 after you have entered the express lane could still result in a toll charge for the entire distance travelled.
We recommend the customer check the tag position before each time you travel in the express lane.
A solo driver in the Express Lane without a valid FasTrak® toll tag is in violation of state law and subject to a fine. Law enforcement officers patrol the lane and use visual and electronic means to catch violators. Also, it is a violation for any driver to cross the double solid lines separating the Express Lane from other lanes. For questions about toll violations, please contact the FasTrak Customer Service Center online or at 877-229-8655. If you have already spoken with someone at the Customer Service Center, please fill out the form here.
The I-680 Sunol Express Lane is governed by the Sunol Smart Carpool Lane Joint Powers Authority, and was funded with State, Federal, and local funds. Alameda County’s voter-approved local sales tax Measure B provided nearly half the funding for the Express Lane. Usage of the express lane has increased steadily since inception.
PERFORMANCE EVALUATION AFTER STUDY
As required by the California Streets and Highways Code Section 149.5 (g), in June 2013, Alameda CTC completed an I-680 Express Lane Performance Evaluation After Study that includes findings, conclusions and recommendations concerning the I-680 Express Lane including an analysis of the effect of the express lane on the adjacent general purpose lanes. The Executive Summary is also available.
