Express Lanes

Express lanes are specially designated highway lanes that let you enjoy more reliable travel as you bypass traffic congestion. FasTrak allows solo drivers to pay a toll to drive in express lanes. Carpools can travel toll-free in all express lanes, but need the FasTrak Flex toll tag to travel toll-free in some Express Lanes.

Express lanes increase the efficiency of our transportation system for commuters, transit and freight, by taking advantage of existing capacity to reduce congestion and improve air quality - giving solo drivers the option to pay a toll for access into the carpool lanes when there is excess capacity.

Express lane operation is fully electronic: No tollbooths or traffic gates. All you need is FasTrak and you are good to go!

Alameda CTC currently operates two express lane corridors. For information on how to use each of the corridors, click on the links below.

The I-680 Southbound express lane requires a FasTrak toll tag for solo drivers. Carpoolers on the I-680 Sunol Express Lane currently do not need a toll tag, but can use the new FasTrak Flex toll tag set to 2 or 3+, or place their standard toll tag in a mylar bag to avoid being charged a toll.
