I-680 Sunol Express Lanes, Phase I

The Interstate 680 (I-680) Sunol Express Lane has been in operation since September 2010. Construction of the project has involved converting high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes to high occupancy toll (HOT)/express lanes along southbound I-680 from south of State Route 84 to north of State Route 237. Conversion required additional roadway widening and installation of tolling equipment throughout the project corridor. A northbound express lane along this same corridor broke ground in April 2018 and Phase I of that construction is now underway.

As one of the top 10 most congested freeway corridors in the Bay Area, people commuting to, from and through I-680 are expected to experience improved traffic flow supported by state-of-the-art technology that will allow for improved enforcement and greater reliability. Construction completion is anticipated for fall 2020.
