Leaders Celebrate Start of Construction on East Bay Greenway in San Leandro

3.5-mile segment of the East Bay Greenway will improve safety and connectivity for people walking, biking, rolling and taking transit

SAN LEANDRO, Calif. – The Alameda County Transportation Commission (Alameda CTC) and City of San Leandro today celebrated the start of construction on the East Bay Greenway Project, with the first construction segment that will improve safety and connectivity along a 3.5-mile corridor in San Leandro and create better connections between neighborhoods, schools, businesses and transit. Alameda CTC Vice Chair and Mayor of Alameda Marilyn Ezzy Aschraft served as master of ceremony for the event held at the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Leandro, an organization located directly on the future greenway.

The project will bring significant improvements to San Leandro Boulevard and East 14th Street, creating safer and more accessible connections for people walking, biking, rolling and taking transit. Improvements will include protected bike lanes, safety enhancements at intersections, new and reconstructed curb ramps and sidewalks, enhanced bus stops, new landscaping, and other features such as bike racks and benches.

“Today we are celebrating the East Bay Greenway’s arrival to San Leandro and what it means to invest in community and improve mobility for everyone,” said Alameda County Board of Supervisors President and Alameda CTC Chair David Haubert. “This project will make it safer and easier for people to walk, bike, roll and take transit while strengthening connections to the places people live, work, learn, and gather. We are grateful to our funding partners and the City of San Leandro for helping bring the first segment of this important project to construction.”
