I‑580 Express Lanes Upgrade Project

The I‑580 Express Lanes have been in operation for over a decade. To keep them operating reliably and accurately, Alameda CTC is undertaking the I‑580 Express Lanes Upgrade Project, which focuses on modernizing the toll system and improving how toll prices are displayed to drivers. Most work will be completed overnight, allowing the express lanes to remain  operational during the day.

Why This Project Is Needed

The current toll equipment and software have reached the end of their useful life after approximately 10 years of continuous operation. Replacing this equipment is a normal and necessary step to:

• Ensure continued reliable operation of the express lanes
• Improve toll accuracy and system reliability
• Reduce the risk of outages or maintenance‑related disruptions

When Work Will Occur

To minimize disruption to travelers, most installation work will take place at night. Drivers may occasionally see work crews or lane closures overnight, but these activities are carefully planned to keep impacts as limited as possible. The express lanes will continue to operate Monday through Friday, 5am to 8pm.

What Is Being Replaced

The overhead equipment above the express lanes, including toll tag readers and traffic sensors, will be replaced one site at a time, allowing other site locations to remain in operation. This phased approach ensures the express lanes continue to function during the work. Equipment in roadside cabinets, along with back‑end software systems, will also be upgraded.

As part of the upgrade, pricing signs will be simplified to create an easier, more consistent experience for drivers. Signs will display fewer destinations, making pricing information easier to understand at a glance. The updated signs will feature three major destinations repeated throughout the I-580 corridor, aligning the corridor with how other Bay Area express lanes display tolls.

Keeping the Express Lanes Working for the Future

The I-580 Express Lanes Upgrade Project is about maintaining a reliable, modern express lane system that continues to deliver faster, more predictable travel along I‑580. This project will keep the express lanes reliable and effective by updating aging equipment, simplifying pricing, and performing most work overnight to minimize disruption.
