Alameda CTC Announces Appointment of Tony Tavares as New Executive Director

Chair of the Alameda County Transportation Commission (Alameda CTC) Supervisor David Haubert announced today that Tony Tavares, current Director of the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), has been selected as the new Executive Director of Alameda CTC. The appointment follows an extensive national recruitment process to identify the next leader to guide Alameda County’s vital transportation programs and investments.

Tavares currently leads Caltrans as its 34th Director, managing a $20 billion annual budget and overseeing more than 22,000 employees across the state. Caltrans is responsible for maintaining 50,000 lane miles of highway, approximately 20,000 bridges, and supporting transit services to over 200 local and regional agencies. He brings over three decades of executive leadership experience at Caltrans and a vision for transportation that addresses critical climate issues and advances a safe, equitable, accessible, sustainable, and multimodal transportation system. He previously served as District Director in Caltrans in the Bay Area and Los Angeles/Ventura regions, where he managed multibillion-dollar transportation programs and advanced regional implementation of Senate Bill 1, California’s landmark Road Repair and Accountability Act.

A civil engineering graduate from the University of California, Davis, Tavares is a licensed Professional Engineer and Project Management Professional. He has been nationally recognized, including for his work in infrastructure delivery. He will officially begin serving as Executive Director on June 1.
