This project is implementing leading-edge technologies including advisory speed signs, adaptive ramp metering and incident management along I-80 from the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Toll Plaza in Alameda County to the Carquinez Bridge in Contra Costa County. "The biggest reason this project is exciting and significant is that the strategies used in I-80 Smart Corridor project help manage congestion and improve safety by using technology on the existing roadway system and on I-80 , where adding lanes is not a viable option," says Murthy. "I think this project is just the beginning, and we will see smart corridor strategies gain momentum throughout the region -- since adding lanes in some corridors are prohibitive, while implementing technology solutions to alleviate congestion is cost effective."
Outside of work, Murthy is also interested in being on the forefront of transportation technology and recently purchased an electric car for his household. "At first I was skeptical about CO2 emission numbers, and then I looked at them closely," he said. "I learned that when you burn one gallon of gasoline which weighs about six pounds, the chemical reaction combining the carbon in the fuel with the two molecules of oxygen in the air gives you 18 pounds of carbon dioxide -- three times as much as your gallon of gasoline. What made me go for an electric car was ultimately the desire to reduce our family's carbon footprint."
